Creative writing: Gothic Monologue part 1
I wasn’t looking for trouble, honest, but it always seems to find me. It was evening and I was taking my usual route home, the moon shining brightly and reflecting off the ash white cobbled path beneath my feet. I hugged my jacket tightly around my body as the cold leached into my skin. Anyway, it was starting to rain, the large droplets falling onto my head.
As the rain grew heavier I happened to stop outside the house, the one that no-one ever went in. They said it was haunted, not safe, but where is these days? It was an old building with dead vines intertwined on its sides and spiders webs clinging to the corners, you may have walked past it yourself. It was immense in size and left an asphyxiating shadow. In the windows there was only darkness, a darkness that seemed to devour any light that reached it. Normally I wouldn’t go near it, it frightened me, but as I stood there shivering the idea of anywhere out of the chilling rain was inviting.
So I ran up the path to the door…then stopped. Does anyone actually live here? Should I knock? I decided to knock, but I did so with such delicacy that I doubt anyone would have been able to hear. No-one came, and I was about to go, but as I turned I saw that there was in fact a crack around the edge of the door. It was open, just slightly and no light was shining through. I pushed the heavy wooden door slowly and as it opened it creaked. Don’t look like that; surely it’s not breaking and entering if the door is open? Anyway, faced with a pitch black room I reached into my pocket for my phone, which when turned on emitted a white orb of light in front of me.
I called out to check there was definitely no-one in and received no reply, the only occupant was deadly silence… it was spine-chilling. I crept slowly in leaving footprints in the thick layer of dust that coated the floor. The room was bare, no furniture in sight, the only defining features were a grand fireplace and a sweeping spiral staircase that lead upwards, further into the darkness. You would have liked it, very traditional. At this point I regret to say that curiosity got the better of me and I crossed towards the staircase. Just as I placed my foot on the first step there was a loud bang and I jumped out of my skin.
